AKN surgery and wound healing
For extensive acne keloidalis nuchae, surgery may be considered when disease is advanced. A 2025 systematic review of 16 studies and 99 patients found varied surgical techniques; primary closure and secondary-intention healing were the most common approaches.
What to understand
The evidence base remains limited and heterogeneous. That makes individualized planning especially important. Secondary-intention healing also has a long history in the AKN literature and can involve substantial wound-care demands.

- Why is surgery being considered at this stage of my AKN?
- Would you use primary closure or allow the wound to heal by secondary intention, and why?
- What will wound care look like day to day?
- How long might healing take, and what complications or recurrence signs should we watch for?
- Who will help manage the wound after surgery?
