A 2024/2025 review describes AKN as a chronic inflammatory scalp disorder with fibrotic papules and plaques that can converge into tumor-like lesions. The condition can also produce scarring alopecia.
Why Keloid Forward emphasizes this
People may see early bumps and assume they're ordinary acne or razor bumps. AKN is different. As inflammation and fibrosis progress, the physical and treatment burden can become much greater.
Large AKN lesions are often described as “keloid-like,” but AKN scars are not automatically the same biological process as true keloids. A person may also independently be prone to true keloid scarring.
