AKN Center · Irritation & routine
Haircuts, helmets and friction: what we can actually say.
AKN's cause is not completely understood. Dermatology guidance does, however, recognize close shaving and repeated rubbing from items such as helmets, collars and other gear as factors that can irritate affected skin and contribute to flares or worsening.
This is not about blame.
Someone who develops AKN did not simply “cause it” by getting a haircut or playing a sport. The practical point is that reducing repeated irritation can be part of managing the condition alongside medical treatment.
Things worth discussing
- Whether close shaving at the nape should be avoided.
- Whether helmets, athletic gear, hats or shirt collars repeatedly rub the affected area.
- How to keep necessary equipment from irritating active lesions.
- What clinician-directed skin and hair-care routine fits your treatment plan.
